Full description

Glen Affric is often thought of as the most beautiful glen in Scotland and somewhere I had wanted to visit for ages. I first got the chance on my birthday week for a camper van trip. Heading into the glen, the road narrows and rises, giving fantastic views of Loch Beinn a' Mheadhoin surrounded by Munros. While Loch Ness is often rough and treacherous even in seemingly good weather, Beinn a' Mheadhoin seems to be shrouded with an unending calm. Fantastic for a relaxing paddle, less so for getting eaten alive by the voracious Scottish midges.

On the last day I walked the circuit which takes you to the far end of Loch Affric, to a serene beach where the river flows into the valley. It is here that I came across the remote Athnamulloch bothy, which despite being a fair size is a tiny speck against the backdrop of the hills and lochs. It made me realise how much expanse there is, how much to explore; and this is only one glen of many. Since then I have been back many times and it might be my favourite place in the world. Each time is the same but different, changing with the seasons.

My Jars of the Highlands Collection uses water scooped up at each of the locations. Since moving to the Highlands one of the biggest changes has been my emotional connection to the water around me; whether kayaking, wild swimming or just marvelling at its beauty. I wanted to capture lf my experiences in watercolour, and painting with this collected water has allowed me to capture the essence of the places I have been.

This A4 giclée print is produced from an original watercolour illustration
