Unique Handmade Eco Friendly Brooch.

Shard Discovered Sandhaven Beach South Shields June 2026 Handmade into Brooch July 2026 I love collecting ceramic, discarded, lost, damaged or just not wanted anymore. Mud-larking rivers and beaches, rummaging around recycling centres and charity shops. Keeping an eye out of any little piece, found by chance just because I happened to be there, a moment in time. While walking Sandhaven Beach, South Shields I came across three lovely pieces of sea worn ceramic. Faded, smoothed by the water, only by luck discovered and reclaimed. After a thorough clean, I decided that two of the pieces were perfect for a new style jewellery project. I'm always on the look out for anything that might usually be thrown out and managed to purchase some wood blanks and pin clasps that were due to be recycled. This brooch is created using 35mm dark wood dyed round with a recycled metal brooch clasp. The sea worn ceramic sits off centre, a tactile 3D shape. I hand polished the shard which brought back some of the shine and protected it with eco friendly sealant. The shape is as found with a slight sanding on the top to stabilise the ceramic. Capturing a moment in time, found by chance and full of times gone by. The idea is to create something new from old, use recycled materials to produce unique gifts. The finished piece isn't meant to be perfect but instead retain part of the original character, including marks/scratches, all part of the history of the ceramic and materials used. Delivered in gift box made from FSC®-certified cardboard and water-based glue. Presented on Jewellery box insert made from tall oil, a by-product of paper production. Sustainable gifts, complete with short bio and gift bag.
