This dragon egg has been made by casting an egg shape in stoneware clay and raku firing it once it has been bisque fired. This means it has an intense metallic lustre. The colour variation depends on the exact glazes used and the way it has been treated after it is taken out of the kiln red hot. Sometimes they are put into sawdust from a local sawmill and sometimes they are put in with shredded paper, from a local school, nothing goes to waste!
The shiny surface makes it hard to do justice to colour and depth of finish on the eggs. Even with diffused lighting the reflective nature of the glaze means you can usually see me on the surface too!
These are purely for decoration and intrigue. No real dragons will ever hatch out of them I'm afraid.

A friend started making some of these with me during a particularly difficult time in her life. She referred to them as phoenix eggs. They are born of fire and flame, but rise from the ashes. I prefer to call them dragon eggs. Still born of the fire and the flame, which is what you do in raku in case you didn't know.
