decorative jug in white crackle raku glaze.

Raku is a very old Japanese method of firing pottery. the pot is fired to extremely high temperatures (around 950 degrees Celsius) and removed from the kiln while still hot. It then goes into a metal container along with combustible material (sawdust/paper etc). The container is sealed to create a reduction atmosphere and any unglazed clay begins to absorb the carbon from the burning combustibles turning the clay black.

Lastly the piece is removed from the container and plunged into water, the temperature shock creates small fractures in the glaze creating the crackle effect.

please note due to the nature of Raku firing this piece is decorative only and is not food safe.

as with all handmade pottery each piece is unique but particularly with Raku the process is extremely variable and so you never really know how a piece may look when it comes through this process.

This piece is not dishwasher safe.

Raku is a fascinating process, it is very volatile and the results are very much down to the "kiln gods" with so many variables in play. However this makes very special and unique pieces and is defiantly worth the effort.

While every effort with be made to ensure safe delivery accidents can happen during transport. Any piece damaged on delivery can be refunded, photographs from the buyer will be required of the damage and of the packaging on arrival. Unfortunately due to the nature of raku firing replacement pieces will not be offered.
