A pretty brooch featuring a simple bunch of lace flowers, tied with a bow, on a background of recycled snippets.

Snippets of fabrics in shades of blue and white, with small highlights of red and pink, have been sandwiched between a top layer of fine blue net and a thin backing layer of polyester, crepe-type fabric. Lines of machine stiitching temporarily basted the layers together. An oval shape was cut from this upcycled background fabric. The edge of the oval was bound with a narrow strip of upcycled cotton jersey fabric from an upcycled T-shirt. A fancy yarn of bright blue, pink and metallic silver was couched in place just inside the binding to highlight the design. Three tiny blue flowers, cut from some gifted lace, were stitched in place. The design has been completed by embroidered stems and leaves in a vintage green thread with a tiny bow in embroidery thread- stitched in place.

The brooch is lightly padded by a layer of 'thick felt' interfacing- an industrial remnant. The back is neatened with a layer of grey felt. A brooch pin is securely stitched in place.

Height - 6 cm approx

Textile jewellery may not be entirely colour fast. Care should be taken not to get the item wet in use to avoid the risk of colour transfer.

I am attempting to use every scrap of the textiles which come into my possession. I have recently made myself a patchwork pinafore dress from printed cottons - some of these fabrics have been with me for almost 40 years and have been carefully reclaimed from former garments ready for reuse. My overlocker was kept busy with so many seems and the trimmings bin on the edge of my work table quickly filled. These trimmings formed the background for this brooch sandwhiched beneath a layer of blue net, an offcut from my bridesmaids dresses. I have been reusing and recycling fabric long before it became an accpeted and encouraged thing to do!
