I produced this 'EARTH MATTERS dish in my potting shed at the bottom of the garden. Once the clay has been carved with the patterns and words it is biscuit fired to 950 degrees. Following this I use coloured underglazes to decorate the dish with all sorts of earthy patterns using a variety of things to print designs with including felt pen tops and credit cards!
Finally a clear shiny glaze is added to the front of the dish and it is fired to 1220 degrees.

The 22 cm diameter dish is supplied in a recyclable cardboard box lined with wood-straw.

These dishes could be used for serving food but most people prefer to put them on a stand or hang them on the wall as a statement artwork to enjoy.

This work was a reaction to reading about the Olkiluoto Nuclear Power Plant in Finland in Robert Macfarlane's book 'Underlined'.

Olkiluoto is home to the first deep geological repository of spent nuclear fuel in the world.

The piece celebrates the beauty of our world above and below ground level and reminds us that we need to act carefully to preserve it.
