Item details

Hand painted bands of colour in lemon yellow and pale grey contrast with the matt black clay in this little vase called Minnie – part of my Simple Earth Collection. There are two ‘ear’ handles near the top, as a finishing touch. Inside I have used a shiny glaze with tones of brown and blue to give an interesting effect, and the glazed interior allows the vase to hold water. The overall vase shape I form with my hands, folding a sheet of clay into a soft oval, and hand forming the handles before firing in my kiln. Under the base you’ll find the mark of my potter’s seal – a swallow in flight. Minnie looks lovely with some delicate wild flowers, or you can pop in pens and pencils, to form a handy home office accessory. 9 cms high.

I love exploring the possibilities of black stoneware clay as a background for abstract art designs.There are recurring themes, motifs and colours in my work, but every piece is unique in form and decoration. I like to work with the minimum of tools so that each piece reflects the nature of the material and the maker, and so that hand-made can be literally what it says!
