My inspiration was to celebrate and commemorate the wonderful heritage of Cornish Tin, and the mining industry which underpins Cornwall's heritage. The tin is re-cycled from ingots recovered from the sea-bed, to make a gift which will last forever and be handed down through the generations.
The tin used for this paper-weight was recovered from the shipwreck of the S.S. cheerful which sank en-route from London to Liverpool, in the early hours of 20th July 1885. She was run down in the thick fog by a torpedo ship H.M.S. Hecla and the collision resulted in the loss of thirteen lives. The original ingots, each stamped with a smelter’s mark, have been skilfully recovered from the seabed by divers.
