Amethyst is the birthstone for Aquarius and February and the stone for the 6th and 17th wedding anniversaries.
Amethyst is also associated with St Valentine.
St Valentine was a Christian priest during the rule of Emperor Claudius II.
The Emperor had forbidden soldiers to marry, as he believed they made better soldiers if unwed.
St Valentine would perform marriages in secret.
The soldiers could recognise him by the amethyst ring, carved with a cupid, that he wore.
He was executed on February 14th 269 and canonised in 496.
