Item details

The Mari Lwyd is a horse's skull on a pole, decorated with bells and ribbons, that used to be paraded from house to house on New Year's Eve in South Wales. The group consisted of the mari and other characters including a sargeant, merryman and punch and judy. They would attempt to gain access by engaging in a rhyming battle or 'pwnco' with the inhabitants and would eventually be let in and the group given food and drink. The custom nearly died out around the industrial revolution as it was associated with drunkenness and debauchery and with paganism, but it has seen a revival in recent years.
