Memento Mori Skull Spoon

Memento Mori Skull Spoon

Description

Hand carved from local holly in Cornwall using traditional tools, this small spoon is an original design and harks back to funeral spoons that were made for presentation to members of the deceased’s family during the 17th century, a memento mori object designed to remind the living that life is brief.

Since the beginning of time, the skull has been used as a symbol of mortality and it's reflected in the rare swarovski crystal faceted skull embedded in the spoon's finial. The spoon is decorated with an incised design and a milk paint finish.
Milk paint is an ancient formula made from ingredients that pre-date the use of petrochemicals. A similar paint was used to decorate objects discovered in the tombs of the Pharaohs. It is environmentally safe, non-toxic, food-safe and entirely solvent free.
A light coast of tung oil has been applied for protection.

Made with an artist's eye and a craftsman's touch, my pieces are solid and elegant. They are meant to last and be loved.

Length: 11cm (4 1/4 inches)
Bowl: 3.3cm L x 2.5cm W

Tung oil is obtained by pressing the seed from the nut of the tung tree (Vernicia fordii). It gives a non-toxic finish that is ideal for surfaces that are expected to come into contact with food.

Inspiration

I take inspiration from both the landscape and sea where I live in Cornwall and like to create spoons and utensils that are useful in the kitchen or at table. This holly memento mori spoon is an original design, carved by hand in my Cornish workshop.

Care: Always hand wash your spoon with soapy water and at dry after washing. Do not put it in the dish washer, or immerse the spoon in water for long periods of time.
