I created this textured handmade ceramic moon jar with contrasting areas of glaze and matt unglazed clay, sgraffito, and eye-catching decorative trims, to use as a vase or just to admire as a piece of ceramic art. I use a combination of moulding and coiling black stoneware clay, so that the form slowly grows as I add coils of soft clay and smooth into shape. I textured the midsection of the jar with my own design, then highlighted this banded area with a burnt cream colour. At the top there is a decorative rim with two loops of textured clay to draw the eye. The topmost part of the shape I have glazed with an iron lustre glaze, and the inside too is glazed so that you can use as a vase. The whole form has an antique oriental feel to it. Looks good as a focal point in minimalist interiors, or as part of a collection of modern ceramics, or to display flowers, grasses or twigs in ikebana style. Please use a mat on painted or polished surfaces as the clay is quite grainy! Approx 13 cms high.

Moon Jars have their roots in Korean ceramic tradition. Originally they were made in white porcelain, but today the term can be used to describe any pottery jars of loosely spherical shape made in any type of clay by throwing on the wheel or by other hand building techniques. I prefer hand building to throwing as I like the looser more informal effects of using the hands and the minimum of tools.
