Sasha is handmade from black stoneware clay with a glazed interior to hold water if you want to show off some buds or blossoms – I’ve picked some lovely scented skimmia from my garden and shown these in one of the images. Or Sasha could work as a houseplant pot holder, showing off a small succulent or cactus in a pot. I create a different design on each piece in the Lunar collection, but the essential motifs are elliptical half-moon shapes in soft pastel shades. Sasha’s shades are grey, pale green, pale blue and light blue, highlighted with a series of dots. For Sasha, I started with a tubular shape and flattened two sides to attach handles, and there are different designs on the back and the front as you can see in the images. Sasha is around 10cms high and 8cms diameter.

The Lunar Collection is very much a mid century modern decorative design, influenced by wallpapers and textiles of the 1950s and 1960s. I’ve used soft pastel shades with motifs of elliptical shapes and dots - the black background of the stoneware clay acts as a counterpoint to my chosen colour palette. To make each piece, I manipulate the clay while it is soft, apply coloured clay slips with a sponge, then after drying I fire to 1000 degrees C. After the pieces have cooled, I glaze the inside, bringing a flash of colour to the interior, then fire again to 1185 degrees C over a 12-hour period. It’s a slow business, but you can’t hurry handmade ceramics!
