Shakespeare's Birthplace Wall Quilt

Shakespeare's Birthplace Wall Quilt
Love this

Stained glass patchwork was the perfect technique for creating this half-timbered house, which I stitched as a homage to William Shakespeare. It depicts the large home in Stratford upon Avon where the playwright was born and raised, and where he and Anne Hathaway also spent the first five years of their married life.

On this fabric picture I’ve used textiles to suggest the different parts of the traditional black-and-white thatched building. A speckled brown fabric creates the thatch; lace flowers suggest the garden; black lace and ricrac depict the window lintels and the large carved crossbeam; net works perfectly for leaded-light windows; and lines of black bias binding produce the half-timbering.

The whole house is appliquéd onto a white brocade fabric, and heraldic Tudor roses decorate the cornerpieces of the design. The pretty flower-print fabric I’ve used for the border picks up the red and green of the rose, and the whole piece is backed and bound in plain black.

A hidden casing at the top back of the quilt will hold your own batten/hanging pole.

The quilt will be sent to you cushioned with reusable bubble-wrap, and packed into a large jiffy bag or recycled cardboard box. Hanging pole and fixings are not included.

Size: 37 x 21in (c94 x 53cm)

Ask anyone in the English-speaking world, 'Who is the most famous writer who has ever lived?', and there's only really one answer: The Bard of Avon, old Shakespeare himself. He introduced an astonishing number of figures of speech and quotable phrases into our language; here are just a few of them:

• parting is such sweet sorrow
• all that glisters is not gold
• if music be the food of love, play on
• dancing attendance
• bated breath
• to sleep, perchance to dream
• it's all Greek to me
• green-eyed jealousy
• the truth will out

I created this design for a course I was teaching in New Zealand; the organisers wanted some particularly English/British themes, so Shakespeare seemed to fit the bill perfectly!
