A small bowl turned from Sycamore in Waltham Abbey for everyday use, eating or decoration, totally unique, beautiful and useful. The Sycamore is from the Gardens at the Abbey and is the most beautiful glowing pale blonde with cream, straw and gold highlights and tiny greenish markings. Has sleekly shimmering very tight grain pattern that undulates and moves like a watermark. The rim is a rounded shamfer making it easy to pass around the table and to hand to someone. The outside profile is very simple with a slight undercurve to the rim leading to an elegant bowl. Handy size, wash and use again finished with light organic flax oil.
Measures approximately 5 inches (13cm) diameter and 1.5inches (3.75cm) high.
A bowl is not 'just a bowl' and I've been experimenting with variations of rims, curves in the bowl part, shamfers and bases - all interesting for me and you I hope. This one is a delight, I simply allowed my chisel to go with the flow and watched the grain emerging all silky and wavering and this one really worked - most satisfying as the two I made earlier my wife rejected saying lumpy for one and uncomfortable to the other and the poor rejects were chucked on the fire! It's best to do this - I want everything I make to achieve a standard that feels lovely in your hands and makes you smile and feel good - make the food taste better, I think...
