This is a large flexible notebook made from old leather and old papers, only the thread is brand new, & everything has the warm hues of the 1970's hence the Retro name! The notebook has curved corners on the cover and attached bookmark and vintage wrapping paper used as endpapers has geometric patterns based on stepped corners and circles. The paper used is 'Bank' paper (from the 1960's or 70's, looking at the box) and is very thin 45g/m2, which gives the notebook its flexible nature. The paper was made by Yates, Duxbury & Sons Ltd. from the Heap Bridge Paper Mills on the banks of the river Roch in Lancashire (fascinating history!) and there is a loose leaf of the paper in the back of the book that documents this and gives a space to test pens and pencils before they are used. It measures 21 x 14 x 3 cm and comes in its own handmade gift box. Each of my books is unique, signed & numbered (this is book number 2,214).

The wine leather had been gifted to an organisation who were putting on an outdoor nativity play, but it proved unworkable for costumes and luckily found its way to my studio. I teamed it with a soft, smooth dark brown leather for the spine, which came from a blousy 1980's jacket and the Retro-feel of the book meant it was perfect for my long-saved (late 1950's? )and un-used geometric wrapping paper from my friend Louise's studio sale. Everything seemed to come together perfectly, and the more I write about it, the more I want to keep it!
