This framed seaside beach collage features a tiny seagull and whale, all handmade using antique beach pottery, driftwood, pebbles and sea glass found washed-up on the beautiful beaches of the East Neuk of Fife, Scotland. The pottery I use is often 19th Century antique beach china - mostly Victorian.
A little seagull made from plain sea pottery and blue patterned sea pottery, sits on a piece of antique china featuring a lovely green leafy and swirly pattern. I love this pottery and have never found anything like it before. It looks quite retro! Alongside, swimming in the waves, is a little whale made from a pale blue stoneware, possibly from an old tile. Some lovely weathered driftwood forms the foreground. Silver plated wire has been used to make the feet and beak for the seagull, water spouts for the whale and a seagull in the sky!
The piece comes in a white wooden box frame and measures 18cm square. (Item:1733)
These fragments of patterned pottery and china gather between the rocks and pebbles at low tide. Many of these pieces originate from the 1800’s and 1900’s, sometimes dating back to the Victorian and Regency eras when the nearby town of Kirkcaldy was at the heart of the Scottish pottery industry. Despite being tumbled and smoothed by the Scottish waves for so long, the patterns and colours remain wonderfully vibrant and the transformative power of the sea ensures each fragment is entirely unique.
