Item details

Heart shaped copper bowl, handmade from 0.5mm thick copper sheet. The bowl has a hammer mark texture from when it was made - this pattern is unique to every bowl.

I cut the heart shape from copper sheet using a jeweller's saw, polish out any marks in the copper and then shape it into a bowl using a hammer. Once the bowl shape is formed, I polish it again, lacquer it and sign it. The lacquer should help to keep the copper bright and shiny, but it may rub off with use and the copper may still go darker, especially in damp or humid environments. The bowl is about 10cm wide at the widest point, 10cm tall (about 4") and 2-3cm high.

I believe copper is the UK 9th, USA 7th wedding anniversary.

The bowl can be used as a decorative dish, tealight holder, key dish, trinket dish, jewellery dish etc.

With all the hearts for Valentine's Day and with the covid pandemic meaning families being apart, I started to wonder if I could make a bowl in a heart shape. I hoped it would be a nice shape for someone to show they cared for someone else. My first stage was to draw a heart shape template that I hoped would work as a bowl. Once I had a shape I was happy with, I cut the shape from copper and had a go at making it into a bowl. The shape made shaping into a bowl a bit more of a challenge!
