I made this bag out of a recycled Scottish tweed jacket found in Lewes in Sussex. The tweed is a herringbone design of black, brown, and cream and inside I have lined it with some very striking cotton taken from an original sarong (originally from Chennai in India but found in a charity shop in Ilminster in Somerset) in blue and brown checks. it fastens at the top with a recycled metal zip.
On the front of the bag I have incorporated the original flapped pocket from the jacket and inside you will find another pocket stitched into the lining.
This would be a good bag for walks (the handle is sized so you can wear it over the shoulder or across the body) or shopping, as it can happily take a wallet, phone, keys, folded umbrella etc. It would also work really well for weekend breaks as it folds away small and can be used as a day bag while sightseeing.
Because each of my bags started as something else (a wool kilt, a tweed jacket, a cotton shirt) they come with a unique numbered card that shows what they used to be, and where they came from – a sort of bag birth certificate. All my fabrics are machine washed before the stitching starts, so you'll be able to put this into a gentle wool machine wash if it needs it.
approx. 30 cm high by 20 cm wide, widening to 27 cm at the base
