Here it is my entry for the Upcycle Christmas competition to raise money for Sue Ryder Care.
It's a miniature pretty lilac silk and lace, beaded indian hand held fan, otherwise known as a punkah !!
Punkah's come in various forms, even being made from palm leaves, but are usually created with scraps of materials fixed over a frame that means they can be moved back and forth to create a breeze.
My inspiration for this punkah came about as we have a couple at home, both looking decorative on the wall and I thought it would be great to have a little one you could pop into your pencil pot to make a change from fiddling with pens when you are on the phone ! :)
This miniature version has been made using the following second hand goods:
an old bangle
an old wooden stick placemat
silk offcuts from an embroidery
felt circle from an old fabric brooch
purple cord and lilac thread and knitting wool from charity shop rummages.
The punkah is decorated with beads from a second hand beaded hairband and lace from a pair of old over nappy baby girl frilly pants (these have been washed but were never soiled in any way)
There is a loop at the back so that the fan can be wall hang when not in use!
It measures 24 cm long and the circlular part measures 12 cm diameter approx with the lace edge.
This punkah will make a lovely gift !
