This mirror is a deliberate curiosity piece, a 'feature' for that special place in your house. The shape is copied from a frame I guess was made a couple of hundred years ago. It is about 400mm tall by 235mm wide and 35mm front to back. The little door hides a mirror and is held in place by a brass hook. There are split turned columns at each side and two pilot holes which can be used to fix it in position. I have given it a distressed finish with charcoal chalk paint over crimson and finished off with a silk dark varnish. I was aiming to create that layered build up of paint and varnish you see in really old furniture. I am hoping that it will develop your own family patina as you use it!

I saw the original concept for these mirrors in a book on folk art where the frame surrounded a picture of two children but I have replaced that with a piece of mirror glass. I made the little door after watching my eldest granddaughter repeatedly opening and shutting cupboard doors and peeking inside and remembered my son doing the same when he was tiny. I thought it would be fun for people to open the door wondering what was behind it only to find themselves peering back. Rare - there will only ever be three like this in the whole wide world!!
