40cms long x 36.5cms wide x 12cms high.

Traditional Boater style hat with 9cms wide brim at the front, widening to 11cms at the back. Front and side brim slightly up curved while the back brim is dipped to protect the back of the neck. Hat size 53.5 cms/21" - small. Please note the hat does not come with a scarf.

Schoenoplectus lacustris - common club-rush - grows in slow-moving, fresh water rivers. All my rush Is cut by myself and a team of fellow basketmakers on the River Isle in Somerset, dried in a barn in Devon and stored at my home in Cornwall, ready for weaving into beautiful items.

Depending how freshly cut the material is when woven, rush items can be quite brightly coloured with a range of greens and yellows. As the item ages and is subjected to light, the colour fades to an overall straw colour. Rush can look quite mottled - this can be natural marking, the effect of mud and silt in the river, moulds or bruising as the rush is harvested. This does not affect the quality of the product so long as it is cared for correctly.

With care your rush hat should last you many years. Try to store it out of direct sunlight and somewhere dry. Damp will cause moulds to form, although it does no harm if it is gently washed with a soft cloth occasionally. Nor does it do any harm if it gets wet in the rain. Just be sure you dry it thoroughly away from direct heat - especially turning it over to dry it properly.

I hope you enjoy your purchase.

I love hats. And so when learnt how to make a rush hat, I fell in love with them. They are light and easy to wear and far more enduring than you might think. My first hat - made at the workshop - lasted about 8 years. I did put it through its paces - it was my gardening hat - and worn for rush cutting - so it got bashed, wet and grubby. But I loved it.

Hats can be dressed up for weddings, flower shows or Royal Ascot even. Trim them with flowers, beads, scarves or your own unique creativity. Or wear it simply with a rush plait or rope trim.

To measure your head for a hat size - measure the circumference of your head where your hat will sit: across your mid-forehead, round where it sits midway across the back of your head and just above your ears. Keep your tape taught but not too tight. If your head measures between two sizes, go up a size, or have one made to measure.

However you wear a hat - wear a rush one.
