Item details

Clay is rolled into a ball, slowly rotated and pinched out into a shallow bowl using the thumb and fingers, till the desired shape and depth is reached for the pond base.
The Mallard duck is then shaped and attached a clay slip mixture to the middle of the bowl.
When dried off slightly, markings can then be scratched around the inside edge of the pinched dish to stat of the impression of grasses that grow at the waters edge and a hole pushed into the centre of the bird to hold the incense stick when completed.
After the first firing, oxides, under glazes, earthenware glazes and wax resist are applied in layers, before finally laying in some crushed, recycled glass bottle which will melt into the base giving the smooth feel and colour of the still water in the canals and ponds, before a glaze firing.
Width 13 cm, height of bowl 4.5 cm.

The inspiration for these incense burners has come from the ponds and stretches of canals that run through my local area.
The edges are built up with layers of scratches, brush strokes and liquid wax to reflect the organic edges of the earthy banks which give life to wild flowers, grasses, insects and wildlife.
Broken piece of bottle green glass have been melted into the base of the bowl during the glaze firing, giving a smooth, still water like appearance, with a pleasing crackle like texture in places.The glass makes the bird look as if it is floating on the surface.
The canal and pond water can often be dark green in colour as a result of disturbed silt and the reflection of the evergreen trees and bushes that grow along the banks.
Although made to hold incense sticks, this little bowl can also be used as a ring dish or for jewelry.
