The antique carved cupboard door panel is hardwood but the rest is pine coated in Danish oil which gives it a matt silky finish. I've left the panel as it is, unfinished, showing the scars and patina of its past usage. I think the panel is quite old as the frame it came out of was hand assembled and the associated drawers had hand-cut dovetails. There are eight folding hooks and two oak pegs on the bottom rail. It is about 705 mm high, 455 mm wide and 93 mm deep when the hooks are folded and 130 mm deep when fully open. The top shelf is 93 mm deep, the lower 73 mm. The folding hooks are made from a single piece of wood with turned ends that fit into holes bored in the top and bottom shelves. I have copied the old makers and lined the rear of the panel with paper, in this case an old poster from Birmingham Museum.
Mr Shipshape says: "I made this hat and coat rack to show off the old door panel. It is made to fit in a narrow space, an entryway in a house or narrowboat corridor where the fact the hooks are not fixed means they can be folded away when not in use or will fold back when you walk into them, bang your head on them, etc etc. I have a matching pair of these and a third which has a different panel and with slightly smaller dimensions. There will never be three more like this, they are genuinely unique. If you would like to see pictures of the other two please contact me."
