This box allows you to store your tiller pole in a handy location either against a vertical bulkhead, close to the rear cabin door or under the gunwale if there is room. It is made from pine and because tiller poles are usually quite heavy I have made it so it is reasonably robust. It is about 650 mm tall, 102 mm at its widest point and about 90 mm deep. The diameter of the hole for the tiller pole is 45 mm. It has been treated with Danish oil which gives a matt, moisture resistant but not water proof finish. The shape of the back is taken from an old blacksmith made iron rudder mechanism I found half buried at the bottom of the cliff at Upnor in Kent, the remains of a doughty Medway cutter no doubt.
Mr Shipshape says: "Now that you have spent all that time polishing your tiller pole you can't just chuck it in the bilge. Stand it where it looks good. Not where it is going to fall on your toe. In this lovely purpose made box!"
