This contemplative abstract piece has echoes of the small figures found in archaeological excavations in Crete, a place where I have spent a lot of time. After making the form from soft clay, I have decorated the natural black stoneware clay with grey-white motifs which combine squares, stripes and inscribed lines. The design continues at the back of the form, with a long white stripe. Hespera is 17 cms high, and looks good alone, or with a group of similar forms from the collection as shown in one of the images. The form has quite a serene look to it, and can be used as a focus of contemplation for mindfulness or yoga meditation – I’m a mindfulness practiser myself. Or just an eye-catching addition to your living room, bedroom, office or snug!

The Mono Collection includes vessels and abstract pieces from black stoneware clay with white sponged-on decoration. I like the contrast between the two extremes of colour, and the matt finish of the natural clay. Each piece is entirely handmade, and I use the minimum of tools because I enjoy the concept of creating something just using my hands alone, which means that nothing comes between maker and the material.
