A three-stage reduction linocut of Middleport Pottery in Stoke-on-Trent. There are three colourways of this print, please choose which variation you would like. It is on white BFK Rives paper, and using Cranfield water-based relief ink. The image is 10cm x 13cm, (roughly A6) and the paper is 18.5 x 19cm. Each print is hand-inked and hand-printed, so each is slightly different giving them each a unique quality. As this is a reduction print, the lino plate is gradually cut away during the process so that no more prints can be made.
I love the shapes of the historic bottle ovens in Stoke-on-Trent, the major hub of the UK pottery industry during the 19th and 20th centuries. These ovens were phased out when the Clean Air Act was brought in, and most were demolished, but over 40 still remain around the city, and I find them a fascinating subject for my work as each is a slightly different shape, and in different states of repair and surroundings. Middleport is probably one of the best known, as it has been the home of The Great Pottery Throwdown, and also the famous Burleigh Pottery. I immediately loved the shapes in this composition when we visited a few years back, and that inspired me to go on to start a series of the remaining ovens!
