A purple and orange vase textured with a geometric patterned design. The purple, 'Smokey Merlot' glaze gradually blends into an orange-yellow, 'Albany Slip' glaze. The raised surface detail has allowed the glaze to flow and play to show off highlights and depths of the glazes. Both glazes have a mottled effect, and the orange glaze continues to the inner surfaces of the pot.

This piece works well as an ornament in its own right. The glaze is waterproof so you could use it to hold water for fresh flowers. The colours have the appearance of heathers and so would work well with dried flower arrangements. It is dishwasher safe.

I designed a series of pots using handmade rollers for the texture. Starting with a cylinder, thrown on the potter’s wheel, the roller is rolled vertically to push the texture into the clay. The round shape of the pot is then made entirely by applying pressure from the inside to push the belly out. It is quite tricky as you can then no longer touch the pot on the outer surface as the texture would then get blurred. I design and make all my own rollers from porcelain clay to get a handmade feel rather than using a commercially produced pattern.
