This cup emulates the form of Japanese Chawan used in Tea Ceremonies. It is a small cup without a handle, designed to be held by the fingers of one hand and supported from below by the fingers of the other hand. Green tea is traditionally brewed at a lower temperate than black tea, therefore handles were not used as the cup does not get to temperatures too hot for handling.

This cup was carved from a solid piece of clay and glazed with a speckled white glaze which breaks over edges and accentuates the carving marks of the tools used. The glaze is food safe

Kurinuki is a Japanese technique of carving a ceramic form from a solid block of clay. It is a reductive technique similar to stone carving in where you remove clay, rather than the traditional western techniques of building up form either by handbuilding or wheel throwing.
