A super little gavel turned by myself from a stunningly grained log of London Plane aka Lacewood. It's one of the most intricate wood patternings I see, a true exotic and one that grows in almost every street in London, partly due to it's fantastic ability to withstand pollution with the incredible mosaic like bark it sheds yearly.
This pretty gavel is the perfect accoutrement for all budding auctioneers, MC professionals and taking control of the dinner table I've Sunday lunch!
It measures 13cm long and the business end is 7cm by 4.5cm approx.
It has an excellent resounding knock when the item is sold at auction or guests are called to attention for the wedding toast!

This one came about after a course I ran here in Waltham Abbey, the student was a treewarden from the City of London and lugged a log plane all the way over here on a bus, train and shanks pony! He decided not to take the remainder home with him - just too heavy so I was the willing beneficiary. It may around for a while as it's a tricky splitter but I showed it who's boss and although I had thought to make spoons I started by playing with a length on the lathe and this is the result - a very special little gavel and a real pleasure to make...
