An elegant stoneware vase with colour variations reflecting the melting and downward flow of the glaze, its thickness, interaction with the clay minerals and the surface texture. This thrown vase would be great for showing off a bouquet of flowers or displaying just on its own. It was made with a UK stoneware and, after biscuit firing, the glaze was applied in several layers. Finally the piece was fired to 1300C to make it impermeable and very durable. The vase measures approximately 23cm tall and 7cm wide and is dishwasher safe. The bottom is impressed with my seal, the letter P, and its identity number 9851.
My interest in vases relates to their sculptural potential and to their function for displaying flowers or other material. On this vase the surface is reminiscent of impressionist paintings and there are sumptuous pale blue glaze pooling and streaky runs that add further visual interest. This slim vase would sit happily on a narrow shelf or could be a vessel to help its owner create an original and eye-catching Ikebana display.
