A number of years ago a local business that made garden riddles, contacted me to see if I could make garden dibbers out of offcuts and rejected pieces of beech.
They bought in lengths of 100mm x 100mm "wet" beech, which they cut down to 10mm strips, which were then placed in a steamer, which made them soft enough to bend into the various diameter riddles.
If the wood was spalted it would turn to mush in the steamer, and so couldn't be used.
Together, we developed, first of all the dibber, and the tamper and seed line came later.
I think all in all, I must have made a couple of thousand dibbers, which were sold in garden centres up and down the country. They even exported some to America.
