Description

A delightful porcelain bowl showing wide variations of colour reflecting the melting and downward flow of the glaze, its thickness and its interaction with the iron oxide decoration. The purple haze, pale blue and cream is where the glaze has ran towards but stopped before the raised hand at the centre. The orange brown derives from iron oxide brush-applied decoration. The bowl was thrown with a UK stoneware and shaped octagonal while still soft. After biscuit firing and glazing the piece was fired to 1300C to make it impermeable and very durable. The glaze was applied in several layers to obtain the required thicknesses inside and out. This wheel thrown bowl is perfect for display of its vibant colours or simply for a contemplative breakfast. It measures approximately 6cm tall and 17cm wide.and is food, oven, microwave, and dishwasher safe. The bottom is impressed with my seal, the letter P, and its identity number 9841

Inspiration

I love the process of throwing, shaping and decorating octagonal bowls. The bowl was fired with a titanium glaze that flows and pools inside to display the exotic turbulent patterns that might be seen in images from space missions. The outer wall has stamped marks of fish on alternate faces and with the central raised hand stopping the flow of melting glaze I am reminded of childhood history lessons about King Canute. When the bowl is turned over there are pale blue glaze runs over textural decoration, an individual stamped pot number and my personal mark, a small letter P This bowl would make a decorative statement on a table or shelf with or without contents and invites inquisitive handling. Equally it could be directly functional for cooking and serving food.
