Item details

Brighten up your lapel with a handmade felt brooch. These colourful squares of felt have a fragment of my Rule 30 knitted fabric needle felted in to the centre. The knitting is made from pure Shetland-style wool from one of Scotland's oldest mills.

They have a standard brooch pin hand-stitched to the back. They are approximately 5cm square.

These brooches are made form the off cuts of the larger items in the Rule 30 collection. It's one way in which I attempt to reduce waste in my studio.

All the pieces in the Rule 30 Collection are knitted on a vintage knitting machine which I've adapted to link to my laptop. This means I can work with patterns that don't have any repeats, like this one. It's generated using an algorithm called a one dimensional cellular automaton. There are many rules in this algorithm and the 30th gives particularly interesting patterns.

I've been fascinated by the intersection of textile crafts and mathematics for many years and hacking my knitting machine has given me the ideal way to express the beauty of the patterns that arise in this area.
