Item details

Cut from a sheet of rolled terracotta clay, using a hand drawn template, details of wings, legs and feathers can be pressed into the wet clay using various tools before drying for the first firing.
When biscuit fired, dark oxides such as iron and manganese are applied to provide depth and contrast, red and white areas painted in using underglaze, letting the natural colour of the clay show through, then a dipped in a clear glaze before the final firing.

These brooches were inspired by all the plants, animals and birds that make up the layers of local woodlands, choosing a base of terracotta clay for an earthy appearance.
This is a chunky brooch and looks best when worn on a heavy jacket or scarf.
Attached to a blank card, the brooch can be sent or given to someone with your own handwritten message inside.
The Robin is easily removed from the card to wear.
