I had been working on some felting kits that showed images from the British countryside and the first animals I chose to do were magpies because they are the mascot of my shop. I too am drawn to shiny things! I first drew the image then simplified it on the computer before having it printed onto acrylic felt so that I could felt it, much as you would a painting by numbers.
