A large stoneware platter with variations of colour reflecting the melting and flow of the glaze, its thickness and its interactions with the clay minerals and the iron oxide decoration. The pale tan-blue and cream are where the glaze is thick and the orange brown splashes derive from brush-applied iron oxide decoration. This wheel thrown platter is perfect for display on a table or it can be used for serving food. It was thrown with a UK stoneware and, after biscuit firing and glazing, the piece was fired to 1300C to make it impermeable and very durable. The glaze was applied in several layers to obtain the required quantity for runs and pooling.
- This platter is food, oven, microwave, and dishwasher safe and measures approximately 6cm tall and 27cm diameter.
- The bottoms is impressed with my seal, the letter P, and its identity number 9567.
I really enjoy the whole process of throwing large pots and there is plenty of scope for freedom of expression with regard to form and for an interesting flow of the glaze over the surface texturing and stamped marks. When the platter is turned over an individual stamped pot number and my personal mark, a small letter P will be seen. It was fired with a tan-blue glaze that pools inside to cream and blue, punctuated with rich brown streaks of brush-applied iron oxide. This piecel would make a personal statement on a table or shelf with or without contents and invites inquisitive handling. Equally it could be directly functional for cooking and serving food.
