Print and pattern most definitely hold a special place in my heart. As does the work of Japanese artist, Yayoi Kusama. She's spent her career covering paintings, sculptures and installations in dots. Her work has inspired many artists, including Andy Warhol.

According to Kusama: "Our earth is only one polka dot among a million stars in the cosmos. Polka dots are a way to infinity. When we obliterate nature and our bodies with polka dots, we become part of the unity of our environment."

This mug is a celebration of Kusama, a beloved Northerner known as Nannie Dot and of striking patterns. The colour of the fired buff clay has a real warmth and natural beauty. I apply each dot individually by hand using a slip trailer. It's slow, meditative work that I can lose myself in.
