Description

A thrown stoneware bowl with variations of blue-green reflecting the melting of the glaze on the texture marks and its interaction with the clay minerals and iron oxide decoration. The glaze was applied in several layers to obtain the required thickness. The pale tan and cream inside is where the glaze has melted and pooled around the imprint of a lobster. The orange brown streaks are from brush-applied iron oxide. The bowl was thrown with a UK stoneware and after biscuit firing and glazing the piece was fired to 1300C to make it impermeable and very durable. This wheel-thrown bowl would be great for display as an eye-catching decorative feature on a shelf or table. It could alternatively function as a serving dish for seafood, fruit or salad.
- The bowl measures approximately 6cm tall and 20cm wide and is food, oven, microwave, and dishwasher safe.
- The bottoms is impressed with my seal, the letter P, and its identity number 9766.

Inspiration

I really love the process of throwing and shaping stoneware bowls. When the bowl is turned over there are blue-green glaze runs over textural decoration, an individual stamped pot number and my personal mark, a small letter P. The bowl was fired with a rutile glaze that pools inside to tan-cream and is punctuated with radial colour streaks. The colours and texture were inspired by the impressionist paintings of VanGogh and more recent pictures from space missions to other planets. This bowl would make a personal statement on a table or shelf with or without contents and invites discussion of visual associations. Alternatively it could be used for seafood, fruit or salad.
