One of my "Islands" range of pens, I make these elegant rollerball pens here on Orkney from an oak stave from a retired Scottish whiskey barrel. A robust twist-action pen, it uses a Parker refill (supplied). To propel the writing nib for use, you simply rotate the top finial, then rotate it back to protect the nib when not in use. The pen has a short-ish body length (about 12cm or 4.5 inches) and is quite wide (about 17mm), making it suitable for every hand, especially those with a grip issue. The clip attached to the top finial will keep the pen securely attached to your pocket, and the oak wood is finished and protected with 8 layers of a satin wax polish. The oak barrel of the pen will only need an occasional wipe with a soft cloth to keep it in pristine condition. The black ink Parker refill, widely available from all stationers shops, has a fine tip and is spring-loaded to give a very smooth writing action. The finial, clip and tip are all chrome plated.

Eynhallow lies between West Mainland and Rousay and is about 75 hectares in area and about 40m at its highest. Eynhallow gets its name from the old Norse "Eyin Helga", or "Holy Island". Access to the island is difficult at best as fierce tides, known locally as "Roosts", sweep around the island set within Eynhallow Sound, making landing dangerous in all but the calmest conditions. The only buildings on the island are the remains of a twelfth century monastery and two old crofters cottages. In 1841 the island had a population of 26, but in 1851 a disease swept through the farming folk and the island was abandoned. The local Laird then ordered the roofs to be removed, rendering the cottages uninhabitable. Now a bird sanctuary, Eynhallow is steeped in folklore and magic. It is believed to be the home of the "Finfolk", shape-changing fairy-like sorcerers that possessed power over the sea and storms.
