Glass and flowers, what a gorgeous combination! Inspired by the simple, Japanese vases which are used to create beautiful flower arrangements, often using very few blooms, I set about designing my own Ikebana from fused glass.

I have used a deep blue glass coated with a rainbow iridescence which changes colour as you look at it from different angles and in a different light, it is quite gorgeous. I have used very few flowers to make the arrangements shown in this Ikebana, they are from a bought bunch of flowers with some foliage from my garden. If you click on the other photographs, you will see some other arrangements I have created at different times.

The flowers are placed into the rust-free Kenzan, or frog, which is included with the Ikebana. Simply add some water and top it up daily and you will have an arrangement that should last many days.

Before I started making glass, a friend had a beautiful flower arrangement which I admired and she explained that it was an arrangement in an Ikebana. I was fascinated by this as I had loved the simplicity of the flowers. When I started to fuse glass I always had at the back of my mind that I could create an Ikebana from glass and after a bit of trial and error, I made a mould which shapes the glass in the centre sufficient to hold the kenzan pins and the water. I love creating different arrangements, especially using flowers from my garden.
