I created this golden yellow decorative art glass dish with a gorgeously tactile matte glass finish - you won't be able to resist stroking it - while the underneath is classic shiny glass. The bowl is patterned with black and white markings and is 15cm (6") square.
I stepped away from the beach for the inspiration for this bowl and looked at the trees in my garden, their bark, and the colour of their leaves in the autumn. We have some huge white poplar trees which were the inspiration for this piece.
My bowls are perfect for holding a small collection of found treasures - perhaps acorns or conkers in this one? But you may not want to cover up the beautiful surface by putting anything in it at all.
During the lockdown period, in common with many artists, I went back to working in a sketchbook more regularly. This series of dishes grew directly from that work when I started to experiment with ways to replicate the colours and markmaking on glass.
I create these dishes from layers of coloured glass powder and clear glass fused together in my kiln. I then smooth and shape the edges of the dish before firing it again into the bowl shape. Each kiln firing typically takes up to 24 hours.
