A framed seaside beach collage featuring a puffin and little blue fishing boat, all handmade using antique beach pottery, stones, driftwood and pebbles found washed-up on the beautiful beaches of the East Neuk of Fife, Scotland. The pottery I use is often 19th Century antique beach china - mostly Victorian.
This whimsical seaside scene is made up of a hand-painted puffin, synonymous with Anstruther and the Isle of May. Alongside, a little blue fishing boat is bobbing in the waves. The boat's hull is made of a fragment of vibrant blue floral patterned beach pottery. The puffin sits on a piece of sea-worn driftwood and alongside a piece of green stoneware forms grassy hills in the foreground. On the horizon, Berwick Law can be seen - made from a piece of green patterned pottery. Silver plated wire has been used to make the feet for the puffin and a seagull in the sky.
The piece comes in a wooden box frame and measures 18cm square.
These fragments of patterned pottery and china gather between the rocks and pebbles at low tide. Many of these pieces originate from the 1800’s and 1900’s, sometimes dating back to the Victorian and Regency eras when the nearby town of Kirkcaldy was at the heart of the Scottish pottery industry. Despite being smoothed by the Scottish waves for so long, the patterns and colours remains wonderfully vibrant and the transformative power of the sea ensures each fragment is entirely unique.
