A Classic pair of solid sterling silver hoop earrings set with round aquamarine gemstone beads and turquoise beryl drops. These chunky earrings are loosely based on historical styles of jewellery from Ancient Rome and Byzantium that have been found by archaeologists all over the old Roman Empire. In order to enhance the ancient feel I have given the thick asymmetrical flattened hoops a hammered finish, which also provides additional sparkle. Aquamarines are precious gemstones related to emeralds and have been used as a travellers stone since ancient times because they evoke the colour of the sea and sky. I have given them a modern twist by cutting flower shaped sterling silver bead caps to protect the aquamarines and using naturally shaped tumbled beryl stones with an intense blue-green colour and a glassy shine for the dangles hanging from the base of the earrings and the lowest teardrop shaped fixing. The earring wires are also handcrafted by me and have been hallmarked by the London Assay Office with my own maker's mark (visible in the close up photograph). These earrings measure 55 mm or just over 2" in length. The final photograph displays them next to a vintage lipstick case in order to give a sense of scale.
I always find myself drawn to the traces of ancient civilizations which still exist in ruins today. The Roman period holds a particular fascination for me because so much is recorded concerning important events such as war, conquest and natural disasters, but the daily lives of the people who called themselves Romans remain enigmatic. The walls of Pompeii and the mosaic covered floors of Fishbourne Palace hint at the intricate and colourful philosophies and stories by which people lived their daily lives, but the true meaning is often lost under the strata of historical interpretation. Roman jewellery styles, with their emphasis on combinations of simple shapes, striking colours and technical honesty seem very wearable to modern eyes. This is my interpretation pieces that are visible in museums all over the world. It does not attempt to be a reproduction piece, rather something that encapsulates the spirit of times gone by.
