This unusual two tiered coffee table is a sturdy, great quality piece in good condition. It has the CC41 mark which denotes the Utility Furniture Scheme which was set up by the British government during the Second World War (and continued for a few years after) to produce efficient products for the public. The piece is marked 1951.

The top is veneered and beautifully grain matched across the four quarters. There are a couple of very small chips to the edge of the veneer and a dent which is less than 1cm (see photo). There was a piece of veneer missing (about 1cm long and 0.5 cm wide) which I’ve repaired (see photo). Overall, this side table is solid.

The table has been stripped of varnish, sanded and finished with several coats of Danish oil. The edges have been hand painted with acrylics and protected with three coats of varnish in a matte finish.

Dimensions are: 50cm square top and 45cm height.

Important: Delivery is not free - I haven’t shown a delivery cost at this stage but I’m happy to obtain a quote based on your location - please feel free to contact me. Alternatively, you’re welcome to collect from north east London.

I refurbish to a good standard and aim to provide honest photographs and descriptions, but please remember that this is a vintage piece which has been hand painted and may therefore have imperfections and signs of wear. If you have any questions or would like any more information or photos, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Meet Celia (named after Celia Johnson, the classic British actress of the 1940s and 50s). This piece was produced in 1951 which was the same year as the Festival of Britain on London’s South Bank which celebrated British innovation in design and technology. It’s a piece of midcentury ‘utility’ furniture made under a government scheme during and post World War II. These two things say: positivity in times of adversity to me - so I wanted to add a joyful element to this piece. The colours I’ve used were inspired by posters for the Festival and the pattern is a classic fifties design.
