These cute patchwork packs are made up from recycled fabric, mainly shirts, table cloths and curtains. The fabric has been washed and line dried before being hand cut with a quilting ruler and rotary cutter. Each pack contains 42 squares of mainly cotton with some linen mixed in. They each measure 5 inches (13cm) square.

Cutting fabric is often not the most interesting part of sewing a quilt or cushion. For a beginner it can be daunting and for an experienced sewer it can simply be boring. Pre cut fabric is ideal when you just want to get on with the sewing.

Each pack contains enough squares to make a quilt with a finished measurement of 27 inches (69cm) by 31.5 inches (80cm).

Because the fabric has had a previous life, some of the squares will contain darker patches where pockets have been removed and parts of existing seams. A few of the white squares came from a formal dinner shirt with lovely pintucks. This is to be expected and just adds to the uniqueness of each finished item.

I try to be as eco friendly as possible, reusing fabric, buttons and ribbons. I also reuse packaging, which may not be as pretty as I would like on the outside, but doesn't affect all the prettiness on the inside.

I love to make what I call "utility quilts". They are made to be used and loved. Dragged around the garden, taken on a picnic in the country or a day at the beach. Kept in the car for the kids to wrap themselves in on a long journey or for the dog to sit on after a swim. They can just be chucked in the washer and dryer and they are good to go.

I have included photos of two different quilts to give you some ideas. One has appliqued stars stitched onto two corners using a lovely blanket stitch, giving a lovely homespun feel. The other one has a border sewn around to make the quilt slightly larger.

Each quilt has a fleece blanket sandwiched between the layers, instead of expensive quilt wadding (batting). And each has a backing made from recycled table cloths. Using pre loved fabric gives the quilts a lovely timeworn look and feel. You don't need to worry about shrinkage or colour running as the fabric has already been washed several times.
