Highland cattle are absolutely beautiful and I love making these little portraits. This one was spotted in a shady meadow in Central Brittany where she was peacefully chewing the cud with a few friends and a very young calf. You can fit an awful lot of character into a small frame and the 3D quality of this portrait really shows off her fabulous long locks.
I wet-felt the background and then shape the face in organic white merino or Norwegian wool fibres with specialist needlefelting needles. These have little barbs along the shaft to catch the fibres and carry them into the work. The whole thing is then covered in dyed merino fibres. The final process is shown in the last two photos. I twist individual strands of wool and push them into place with a single barbed needle.
