An elegant pale celadon porcelain jar with a bamboo handle and subtle colour variations reflecting the melting and flow of the glaze into the stamped markings. The glaze is transparent where thin and pale blue-green where it has pooled in the textile marks and medallion. This hand-built octagonal jar with a varnished bamboo knob is perfect for pasta, herbs or decorative display. The jar was made with a UK porcelain and, after biscuit firing and glazing the piece was fired to 1300C to make it impermeable and very durable.
- All of my work is one-of- a-kind and made by hand.
- The jar measures approximately 24cm tall and 8cm wide. The bottoms is impressed with my seal, the letter P, and its identity number 9787.
I like making lidded jars because I am told by returning customers that they often get used regularly. I want to engage with people by providing them with something thoughtfully handmade that usefully fits into their daily routine. I take care to make a well-fitting lid to add to the pleasure of its use. The surfaces have indentations and stamps to retain a layer of glaze and there are dashes of brush-applied green-brown iron oxide to add an abstract visual interest. This jar pays homage to my long-term interest in the graceful Chinese porcelains of the Song Dynasty. It also evokes a vision of fresh water flowing over gravel along a clear stream.
