An elegant stoneware vase with a range of colours deriving from variations of glaze thickness as it melts and flows into the applied texture marks. The glaze chemical interaction with the clay minerals and the brush applied iron oxide decoration also add to the colour range. This hanb-built vase is ideal for showing off a bouquet of garden stems or display just on its own. The vase was made with a UK stoneware and was textured with fabric and carved wooden stamps based on prehistoric cave paintings. After biscuit firing, the glaze was applied in several layers to encourage runs into the texture marks. Finally the piece was fired at 1300C to make it impermeable and very durable.
- All of my work is one-of- a-kind and made by hand.
- The vase is food, oven, microwave, and dishwasher safe and measures approximately 24cm tall and 8cm wide.
- The bottom is impressed with my seal, the letter P, and its identity number 9475.
My love of making vases relates both to their display function with flowers or other material, and to their sculptural potential regarding shape, colour and texture. This vase was partly insplired by the colours and textures that might be seen in an impressionist painting. However, the vase can also be a functional vessel and help the owner to create an original and eye-catching ikebana display with maple or yew stems.
