Handmade butter knife made from Yew wood from the botanical gardens of Bath. Knife measures 17.5cm long by 2.5cm at the deepest part of the blade. The handle is approx 1.5cm wide. The knife comes in a sturdy blue card presentation box.
Customers always ask for things and some were recounting paper knives that their older
relatives used when they were little. The stories varied between lethal Italian stiletto knives
and almost useless wooden rulers. I decided to reinvent wooden knives I first made in the 1980s
to meet this hidden demand. I cut the width and general shape on the bandsaw, and then
the fine tuning of the shape of the blade and handle is done on the belt sander and finished
with good old handheld sandpaper. I love the way you begin to appreciate the true colour,
smell and quality of each wood type you use in the production process and this is why I don’t
pyrograph the blade with the maker’s mark as I used to in the 1980's (customers instead get
that information on the sales label).
